Since the end of the 20th Century, plastic has been an affordable, versatile, and durable material.
However, most plastic materials take many centuries to degrade so all the plastic that was sent to landfills in Ireland is still there — but we are still producing and consuming even more.
This plastic must be moved. It is often left on the streets or in rivers of developing countries before reaching the ocean, where it poses a threat to marine life.
The truth is that we can’t handle the volume of plastics on our planet, nor the continued production. Our attitudes and behavior towards plastic need to change if we want a safer and more sustainable future for our planet.
